I was asked to configure a Cisco 899G 4G LTE router. This is to quickly deploy Internet access for remote sites using 4G/LTE as its medium for WAN connectivity. 4G uses a nano SIM card and you'll need a 2G SIM card adapter in order to fit into the router's SIM card slot. Below is what a nano SIM card adapter looks like.
This is the front panel of the Cisco 899G LTE router.
These are the ports at the back of the router. It has dual 4G antennas, a built-in 8-port GigabitEthernet switch (GE ports 0-7), dual GigabitEthernet WAN ports (GE WAN ports 8 and 9) with the option for fiber SFP for one GE WAN. The dual SIM card slot is covered by a metal plate and you'll need a flathead screwdriver to press it down and pull it off.
Once the metal cover is removed, take note of the orientation for inserting the SIM card using the SIM icon/drawing beside S0 and S1.
There is also an option to use an extended antenna (4G-AE010-R) to get a better signal.
Once the router completely boots up, take note of the LED lights in front such as the SIM card slot number, the signal strength (RSSI) and if LTE/WWAN is active.
Below is the initial router bootup.

I got a 14 Mbps download / 22 Mbps upload Speedtest result from the PC connected (wired) behind the Cisco 4G router. I also tested using a 3G SIM card (used the same SingTel LTE/APN profile) which also worked and got almost the same Speedtest result.
Below are some helpful troubleshooting commands and remotely check router LED status.

ReplyDeleteThanks friend, using your examples i can configure my cellular interface on my 899!
ReplyDeleteMuchas gracias desde Argentina!
thank you
ReplyDeleteThank you! You did an awesome job! I would like to add that I was able to get the visible service working and would be happy to share the efforts I went thru if anyone is interested, was a bit of a pain but I found the service works on two of the bands on the MC7370 SIerra Modem. Visible uses verizon's 2, 4, 5, 13, and 66. The 7350 allows LTE Bands B4 (AWS-1), B13 (700 c), B25 (1900+). So tonight I was going to use AT commands to narrow down to 13 but before I had a chance to cull the bands down to 13 only with AT command set, the modem locked onto 13 and I got traction. The ideal modem to use would be the MC7450 since it offers 2/4/5 and you might have to cull on 66 on that modem flavor. Anyhow It came up and getting 5 meg but I live in a river valley getting poor sig. and not so much a freq issue.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to some AT command setup action. http://ltehacks.com/viewtopic.php?t=669
To access the modem, setup a password on vty line 3, you telnet using port 2003, then exec AT commands. So far, did not need to go thru this trouble since the modem locked in on band 13 but not sure if this will happen consistently.
Anyhow I rarely get a chance to give back but from I can tell, I may have been the 1st to break ground in this effort. Thanks Again!! This post gave me inspiration and I hate putting off brand equip in my lab, trying to keep it all Cisco and Avaya. Will be drilling the voice and SMS next.
