Cisco Catalyst 9300 IOS-XE Upgrade

My family and I spent our Christmas holiday last year in Bohol, Philippines. The people there were very warm and hospitable. We visited several tourist spots such as the famous Chocolate hills and Sanduguan (Blood Compact) shrine.

This is a Tarsier, which is one of the smallest primate in the world. They're only found in the forests of Southeast Asian islands (Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia)

We tried the Loay River Cruise and had buffet lunch in Rio Verde floating restaurant. The Loay River Cruise has a more "nature view" (and good food too!) compared to Loboc River Cruise which we've tried many years ago.

This is the new Cisco Catalyst 9300 switch (48-port). The USB slot (type A) is found in front of the chassis (beside the mini USB console port) and it's used for file transfers (for software upgrades).

The console port (RJ-45) and dedicated out-of-band (OOB) management port are found at the rear (left most).

It's has a dual power supply. Power Supply Unit (PSU) slot A is located on the left and slot B is on the right.

Below are the steps in upgrading the IOS-XE software in a Cisco Catalyst 9300 switch:

1. Ensure there's enough flash space for the new IOS-XE file. You can use the install remove inactive privilege exec command to remove old and unused files.

#install remove inactive

2. You can use the USB slot to quickly transfer the new software image.

copy usbflash0:/cat9k_iosxe.17.06.04.SPA.bin flash:

3. Verify the MD5 hash and compare the string output published in the Cisco download website.

verify /md5 flash:cat9k_iosxe.17.06.04.SPA.bin

4. Check if the boot variable is set to flash:packages.conf

show boot system

5. Set the boot variable if it's not yet configured.

boot system flash:packages.conf

6. Install/activate the new IOS-XE software, type "yes" to proceed.

install add file flash:cat9k_iosxe.17.06.04.SPA.bin activate commit

7. Verify the new package file and IOS-XE version.

dir flash:*.pkg

show version

8. Remove old files.

#install remove inactive

Renumber a Cisco Catalyst 3650 Switch Stack

Here's a link to manually change or renumber a Cisco Catalyst 3650 stack number. This also applies to a Cisco Catalyst 3850 since it has an identical IOS-XE architecture. The switch was removed from a stack and re-purposed as a standalone switch. It remained as logical switch number 4 and the interfaces starts with Gi4/0/x which is quite annoying.

Cisco ASR ROMMON (Ctrl+Break) Shortcut

I had to perform a password recovery on a Cisco ASR router and my HP laptop doesn't have a Break key which is commonly used enter the router ROMMON mode. This Cisco link lists some of the standard break key using different terminal emulator (puTTY, SecureCRT, etc) and PC OS (Windows, Mac, etc).

An alternative and easy way to enter ROMMON mode in a Cisco ASR router is simply do a Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Shift+6 combo.

Autoboot: aborted due to user interrupt

 [CTRL-C]

monitor: command "boot" aborted due to user interrupt

rommon 1 > confreg 0x2142

You must reset or power cycle for new config to take effect

rommon 2 > sync

rommon 3 > reset

Cisco 3650 IOS-XE 16.12.07 Upgrade

Here's a link in performing an IOS-XE upgrade in a Cisco 3650 Catalyst switch. This is also applicable to a Cisco 3850 since they share the same platform architecture. I had to upgrade a Cisco 3650 from IOS-XE 16.06.08 to 16.12.07.

Transfer the new IOS-XE to the switch flash memory.

#

# package.conf: provisioned software file for build 2022-02-02_07.35

#

# NOTE: Editing this file by hand is not recommended. It is generated

#       as part of the build process, and is subject to boot-time

#       consistency checks. Automatically-produced package files are

#       guaranteed to pass those checks. Manually-maintained ones are

#       not. Because "nfs" and "mount" directives are processed first,

#       regardless of their position in the file, the recommended

#       approach is to keep a separate file containing JUST your

#       personal "nfs" and "mount" directives, and to append it to the

#       automatically-generated file.

#

#     Note further that when SHA-1 checksum verification is enabled,

#     you will NOT be able to alter this file without updating the

#     SHA-1 sum.

#

# This file can contain three types of entries:

#

#

# NFS directives (optional)

#     notes:    NFS directives are processed before all others (mount, iso).

#               Multiple NFS directives may appear so long as they do not

#               conflict -- that is, specify the same source or mountpoint.

#     syntax:   nfs <IP ADDRESS>:<REMOTE_PATH> <LOCAL_MOUNTPOINT>

#     example:  nfs 127.0.0.1:/auto/some/nfs/path /auto/some/nfs/path

#

#

# mount directives (optional)

#     notes:    mount directives are processed after 'nfs' and before 'iso'.

#               One mount directive may appear for each F/S/B/P tuple

#     syntax:   mount FRU SLOT BAY   PACKAGE_NAME   LINUX_PATH

#     example:  mount rp 0 0 rp_base /auto/some/nfs/path/abs_soft/rp_base.ppc

#

#               The specified LINUX_PATH may be local [sata disk] or

#               reference the NFS mounts since they are processed first.

#

#               Mount directives cause the package-specific mount link to

#               be set to the specified path instead of to the mountpoint

#               in sw for the corresponding ISO.

#

#

# iso directives (mandatory)

#     notes:    iso directives are processed last: any package for which

#               a 'mount' directive does not appear will be mounted.

#               One iso directive may appear for each F/S/B/P tuple.

#     syntax:   iso FRU SLOT BAY   PACKAGE_NAME  PACKAGE_FILE.bin

#     example:  iso rp 0 0 rp_base rp_base.ppc.bin

#

#               PACKAGE_FILE.bin is a path relative to the packages.conf

#               file.  Although it supports sub-directories for development

#               purposes, in deployment the files will always be managed

#               as in the same directory as packages.conf so as to

#               guarantee that name collisions cannot occur.

#

# Note that the RP 0/1 distinction is a convenience for development

# and testing as it allows us to have a packages.conf describe a

# SW load that varies depending on whether the RP finds itself in

# slot 0 or 1.

#

# The ISSU process *must* update *both* RP slots simultaneously so that

# the RP will behave predictably whichever slot it finds itself on [e.g.,

# if package X is upgraded, and the RP is ejected and put into either

# slot of a new chassis, we expect to see the upgraded X without regard

# to slot].

Master Stack Switch 1 has the correct package files for the new IOS-XE 16.12.07.

3650-STACK#more flash-1:packages.conf

#! /usr/binos/bin/packages_conf.sh

sha1sum: 97b8f831ba81fcb9fa3234c6d9ab77402f1cc292

# sha1sum above - used to verify that this file is not corrupted.

# to slot].

Member Stack Switch 2 packages.conf still points to the old 16.0.6.08 package files.

#! /usr/binos/bin/packages_conf.sh

#

# package.conf: provisioned software file for build 2020-04-23_17.50
